A Five-Ring Opening Circus, Weirdly and Unabashedly British
The noisy, busy, witty, dizzying production somehow managed to feature a flock of sheep (plus a busy sheepdog), the Sex Pistols, Lord Voldemort, the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a suggestion that the Olympic rings were forged by British foundries during the Industrial Revolution, the seminal Partridge Family reference from “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” a group of people dressed like so many members of Sgt. Pepper’s band, some rustic hovels tended by rustic peasants, “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and, in a paean to the National Health Service, a zany bunch of dancing nurses and bouncing sick children on huge hospital beds.
130 cyclists arrested for breaking Olympic cordon
Police protecting the Olympic Park on opening night said Saturday they arrested more than 130 activists on bicycles involved in an hours-long effort to breach the park’s security cordon.
Police said they were aware that a monthly protest by cyclists was planned for Friday but ordered the protesters to remain south of the River Thames, to keep them from blocking more than 80,000 ticket-holding guests from attending the Olympics opening ceremony.
The anti-capitalist group Occupy London, part of a global movement that has waged demonstrations against financial institutions and capitalist policies, said some cyclists were members of the movement. They said police cordoned off more than 100 cyclists at one road junction near the stadium as Friday’s ceremony was beginning and held them there several hours.

Good for the bobbies. They don’t believe in capitalism who takes care of them!
British Islamists Call Off Protest Against ‘Evil’ Olympic Games
A group of British Islamists called off a protest planned for outside the London Olympic Park on Friday, Reuters reported.
The group, led by some of Britain’s most prominent Islamist figures, had intended to gather outside the gates to the park ahead of the opening ceremony to denounce what they called “the evil of the Games.”
Police said that since it was a standing protest, not a march, the group was not required to obtain permission. Organizer Mizanur Rahman told Reuters said police had made it clear to him that the protest should not go ahead.

Bet the British are so glad that they have allowed these ingrates to their country and them to drive into bankruptcy.
London protesters march against `capitalist’ Games
About 500 people critical of the economic impact and corporate flavor of the London Olympics marched Saturday near the Olympic Park, determined to send a message that Britain is not united in backing the games.
The protest march came hours after police arrested more than 130 bicyclists who had defied an order to avoid cycling in groups around the stadium during Friday night’s opening ceremony.
Police said they had ordered the protesters to remain south of the River Thames, to keep them from blocking thousands of ticket-holding guests from attending the opening ceremony. The cyclists said they were held in a cordon by police, and later arrested, for trying to cycle in lanes restricted for official Olympic traffic.
