The money is not the point at all, It’s about the random acts of kindness. I’m just setting an example, and if 10 percent of the people who see me emulate what I’m doing, anybody can be a Secret Santa. And I hope I give all my money away before I die.”

Staten Island Sandy victims pack New York City Town Hall, November 29, 2012.  More than 1,000 people went to New Dorp High School to ask FEMA and other agencies what to do about their damaged homes and neighborhoods.

People were turned away at door and could not fit into auditorium.

Nicole Chati of New Dorp Beach said,

These people are frustrated, Lives were lost. My house — I can rebuild the house. My neighbor is dead.”

Tom Saglembeni of New Dorp Beach exclaimed,

What’s gonna happen to our neighborhood? Are they condemning our neighborhood?”

Scott and Deirdre McGrath injected,

I’m homeless. My home has no gas, water, sewage, but yet I’m still sleeping in there.  I have dust and mold that he [Department of Health NYC] is telling me to avoid, where am I supposed to go?  I’ve gone to FEMA, SBA, apartments.com, Robert Defalco Realty.  I’ve gone to news, I still cannot find an apartment, where am I supposed to live?  I feel just as lost as I did before I came here.”

Other people yelled,

I have a question!” “No one is doing what’s right for us!” “You’re a piece of crap!” “Don’t run around and pass the buck, from the FEMA guy to Department of Buildings guy.  Help us, answer our questions.”

Forbes list of American States in a fiscal death spiral. Thinking about buying a house? Or a municipal bond? Be careful where you put your capital. Don’t put it in a state at high risk of a fiscal tailspin. Eleven states make our list of danger spots for investors. They can look forward to a rising tax burden, deteriorating state finances and an exodus of employers. The list includes California, New York, Illinois and Ohio, along with some smaller states like New Mexico and Hawaii. If your career takes you to Los Angeles or Chicago, don’t buy a house. Rent. If you have money in municipal bonds, clean up the portfolio. Sell holdings from the sick states and reinvest where you’re less likely to get clipped. Nebraska and Virginia are unlikely to give their bondholders a Greek haircut. California and New York are comparatively risky. Two factors determine whether a state makes this elite list of fiscal hellholes. The first is whether it has more takers than makers. A taker is someone who draws money from the government, as an employee, pensioner or welfare recipient. A maker is someone gainfully employed in the private sector.
