Lebanese Olympic Team Demands Barrier Separation From Israel Squad
The Lebanese judo team forced International Olympic Committee officials to erect a barrier between themselves and the Israeli judo squad, Friday afternoon in London, just hours before the Games’ opening ceremony, reports Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot.
Both teams were scheduled to train inside London’s ExCeL center but Lebanon’s team did not want to be seen by the Israeli one, and IOC officials heeded to the Lebanese’s demand after the team’s coach demanded separation.
This is not the first time Middle Eastern judo teams have caused a political stir. In February, Egypt’s Ramadan Dawris defeated Arik Zeevi of Israel, but afterwards, Dawris refused to shake the hand of his competitor.
The opening ceremony will air on NBC at 7:30 pm ET.

IOC probes Irish athlete’s bets on opponent to win
The Ireland Olympic team is investigating allegations that one of its athletes cashed in bets on an opponent to win at a pre-London Games event.
The Olympic Council of Ireland confirmed reports Saturday that an athlete made a €3,900 profit ($4,800) on the wagers, and withdrew €3,600 ($4,435) in cash from an account with a gambling operator.
“At the moment, it is between the Olympic Council of Ireland legal department and athlete’s counsel,” team spokesman Jack McGouran told The Associated Press by telephone.

Cool description of Gymnastics
Great video. I watched some of the Olympic videos of the girls dancing with balls, and a trio of Russians do a floor dance. Wow
Austerity at The Olympics: Each “Gold” Medal Contains 1.34% Gold
As every Olympic athlete knows, size matters. The London 2012 medals are the largest ever in terms of both weight and diameter – almost double the medals from Beijing. However, just as equally well-known is that quality beats quantity and that is where the current global austerity, coin-clipping, devaluation-fest begins. The 2012 gold is 92.5 percent silver, 6.16 copper and… 1.34 percent gold, with IOC rules specifying that it must contain 550 grams of high-quality silver and a whopping 6 grams of gold. The resulting medallion is worth about $500. For the silver medal, the gold is replaced with more copper, for a $260 bill of materials. The bronze medal is 97 percent copper, 2.5 percent zinc and 0.5 percent tin. Valued at about $3, you might be able to trade one for a bag of chips in Olympic park if you skip the fish.

Italian Olympic Team Commemorates Munich Massacre
The Italian Olympic team at the London Olympic Games made a noble gesture Sunday and stood in silence outside the quarters of the Israeli team, in memory of the 11 athletes slain in the Munich Olympics 40 years ago, Voice of Israel radio reported Sunday.
About 30 Italians were present at the ceremony, including Italy’s Minister of Sport, the heads of the Italian Olympic Committee and athletes. Israeli Olympic Committee head Tzvi Varshaviak and Olympic delegation leader Efraim Zinger also took part.

Beautiful and why didn’t the other teams do the same? Where were the American teams? Applause!
Olympics Opening Ceremony Honored British Terror Victims, But Not Israelis Killed at Munich Games
The International Olympic Committee’s assertion last week that Friday’s London 2012 opening ceremony was not the appropriate setting to remember the Munich terror assault 40 years ago rang hollow after the event did include a moving tribute to others who have died, including British terror victims.
That segment of the otherwise upbeat ceremony, featuring a poignant rendition of the hymn “Abide with Me,” could easily have accommodated a reference to the 11 Israeli athletes and coaches killed by PLO terrorists during the 1972 summer games – but did not.
“We feel that the opening ceremony is an atmosphere that is not fit to remember such a tragic incident,” IOC chief Jacques Rogge said a week earlier, and declined to reconsider despite the appeals of the widows of two of the slain Israelis, who took a petition to London and held a press conference.

Are the British afraid that the Muslims might get upset? The UK keeps getting closer and closer to becoming another Muslim state.
UPDATE 1-Olympics-Judo-Saudi woman allowed to compete in hijab
A female Saudi fighter will take part in the Olympic judo competition after being allowed to wear an Islamic headscarf, or hijab, of a specific design, officials said on Monday.
Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani is one of only two Saudi women to travel to London after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) lobbied the conservative Islamic kingdom to end its refusal to send women to the Games.
But she had said she would only compete if she was allowed to wear the hijab, and judo officials refused, saying it would be dangerous.
A Saudi National Olympic Committee spokeswoman said the committee, the IOC and the International Judo Federation (IJF) had now agreed on an acceptable form for the headscarf.

Top coach calls China’s Ye ‘suspicious’
A top US coach Monday called China’s Ye Shiwen “suspicious” and compared her to East Germany’s drug-addled athletes after her super-fast times were questioned at the London Olympics.
John Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, told The Guardian that the 16-year-old’s lightning freestyle leg in her world-record 400m individual medley swim was simply “impossible”.
The schoolgirl timed 58.68sec in the last 100 metres, a whisker off US winner Ryan Lochte’s time in the men’s competition. Astonishingly, her final lap was quicker than the American champion.

Maybe she just got lucky. Call for the tests not in front of the world.
American women roll to team gymnastics gold
For reigning world champion Jordyn Wieber, there will be no chance to be the next Nadia or next Mary Lou. But Tuesday, in the team finals, she wrote a bigger story, perhaps a more lasting one, too.
The Americans won their first Olympic team gold since the “Magnificent Seven” in 1996 as Wieber shook off her own disappointment and came up big for the USA. The Americans finished with 183.596 points. Russia won silver with 178.530. Romania took the bronze 176.414.
Competing in three of the four rotations, Wieber was her usual solid self. On this night at North Greenwich Arena, there was no time for jitters. She was first up on vault. As she landed a huge smile spread across her face. Wieber Fever had begun. As she left the floor, the first person to embrace her was Aly Raisman, her best friend and teammate who grabbed one of the USA’s two spots in the individual all-around.

Pasadena-born Missy Franklin wins gold in 100-meter backstroke
Missy Franklin of the United States had 15 to 20 minutes between swims to get ready for the most important final of her 17-year-old life at the London Olympics on Monday night.
She shrugged off the pressure and tight time schedule to win her first Olympic gold medal, taking the 100-meter backstroke in 58.33 seconds at the Aquatics Center.
“It is exceeding my expectations by a hundred billion times. When you dream about something your whole life and you achieve it … you don’t totally understand until you achieve it,” Franklin said.
Emily Seebohm of Australia (58.68) was second and Aya Terakawa of Japan (58.83) finished third

Greatest Olympian ever! Phelps beats all-time record medal tally with double in pool
Just when it seemed the Baltimore Bullet was in danger of becoming the silver bullet, Michael Phelps secured one more gold medal to become the greatest Olympian in history last night.

Bob Costas Interviews Michael Phelps After Setting All-Time Olympic Medal Record… And Shames Him WTH
After setting the all-time Olympic record for most medals ever Bob Costas interviewed the Greatest Olympian Michael Phelps…
And he shamed him.
From the interview:
Bob Costas: “Let’s talk about that 200 butterfly. You had the lead much of the way. You were out-touched by Chad Le Clos of South Africa 5 one-hundredths of a second. It’s hard to say that when you win a silver medal that something has gone wrong but your standard is so high that I guess we can put it that way. What went wrong?
Bob Costas: But virtually anybody else’s standards you’re still working like a demon but in 2008 in Beijing you were at the peak of fitness, peak of talent and technically you were also better than everybody else… Is it fair to say that even a little bit, where things are measured in one-hundredths of a second, even just a little bit, you’re not quite where you were in ’08?
Bob Costas: You’re one of the greatest competitors ever but I get the sense things are winding down in your career…
This interview took place moments after Michael Phelps set the record for most medals of any Olympic athlete ever.
What a jerk.
Jealous because he has no talent. Stuipd for this entire interview.

North Korean weightlifter credits Kim Jong Il for world-record feat of lifting thrice his weight
North Korean Olympian Om Yun Chol joined an elite list of weightlifters to have lifted three times their weight during the men’s 56-kg, group B, clean and jerk weightlifting competition at the London Olympics, and he has credited his world-record feat to late North Korean leader Kim Jong Il.
Om won the gold medal in the process, and according to him, it was all thanks due to their late ‘great leader’.
The 20-year-old Om, who stands just a shade under 5 feet, also set an Olympic record when he cleared 168 kilograms (about 370 pounds) in the clean and jerk in the men’s 56-kilogram (about 123 pounds) category.

Olympic athletes pay the IRS for winning gold( Rubio is in Congress tyring to repeal the tax)
Americans who win bronze will pay a $2 tax on the medal itself. But the bronze comes with a modest prize—$10,000 as an honorarium for devoting your entire life to being the third best athlete on the planet in your chosen discipline. And the IRS will take $3,500 of that, thank you very much.
There are also prizes that accompany each medal: $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver, and $10,000 for bronze.
Silver medalists will owe $5,385. You win a gold? Timothy Geithner will be standing there with his hand out for $8,986.

I hope the Congress will pass this bill. I am amazed that they have to pay taxes on that, look at what they have to do for years and years. I know we are broke as a country but this should have never happened to any Olympian ever.

Olympics: Australian rower arrested after shop front damaged
An Olympic rower for Australia was arrested by police after a shop front was damaged, officials said today
Joshua Booth, 21, then fainted and hit his head while at the local police station and had to be taken to hospital for a check-up.
Booth, who it is believed may have been drinking, competed in the men’s eight rowing event yesterday, but his team failed to win a medal.
He was arrested early today following the incident in Egham, Surrey. Booth must return to the police station tomorrow.

Boxing: Judges under fire amid “fix” claims
Olympic judges and referees came under fire on Wednesday with one fighter accusing them of “a fix”, another successfully appealing a loss and even boxing great Lennox Lewis questioning some of their calls.
Iran’s Ali Mazaheri cried foul when the heavyweight was disqualified after being warned three times for persistent holding against Cuban Jose Larduet Gomez despite leading by two points going into the second round.
“It was a fix. I could have got a bronze easily if it hadn’t been for that,” an irate Mazaheri, who walked out of the ring before the decision was officially announced, told reporters through a translator.

The Greatest! Phelps Beats Lochte; Makes History Again
The classic rivalry between teammates Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte peaked Thursday with a final showdown in the 200m IM.
Michael Phelps made history in his final showdown with Ryan Lochte, becoming the first swimmer to win gold in the same event in three straight Olympics in the 200m individual medley on Thursday.
For Phelps, who plans to retire after his last Olympic race on Saturday, the triumph over Lochte proved he remained the top swimmer in the world, probably the best ever.

Romney: Olympians should not pay taxes on medals
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney agrees with the Republicans who say Olympians from the United States should not pay taxes on the medals they win.
“He believes that there should be no taxation of the type that you’re describing,” Romney campaign senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said in a conference call with reporters Thursday.
Romney led the 2002 winter games in Salt Lake City, Utah.

How Do You Spend $69,000 On Lunch At The Olympics?
By buying a bottle of Hennessy 1853, according to an anonymous person on Reddit. He posted the above photo to the social networking site’s Olympics forum, claiming he’d received the photo from a friend who was a waiter. “This is a receipt from lunch for 15 Olympic bosses,” he wrote. “Now we see where all the money’s going…”
Yes, £44,660 (or $69,000) is a lot of money. Everyone else thinks so, but too bad that the original poster deleted his account after someone pointed out that he could get his friend fired for posting the receipt online, much like that time someone did the same thing to Peyton Manning.

If it was bought with somones own money, who cares. If this was charged to a countries cost of sending their team, that I have a problem with.
Putin, a black belt, watches Olympic judo
He clenched his fists at times, leaned back nervously at others. And when his compatriots won Olympic gold, he leaped from his seat and thrust his arms skyward.
A common fan reaction — from an uncommon fan.
Vladimir Putin was one thrilled Russian president on Thursday.
The longtime judo enthusiast had a VIP seat to watch Tagir Khaibulaev win the 100-kilogram gold medal. When the match ended, Putin led the celebration. He slipped back into his suit jacket, met Khaibulaev moments after he walked off the mat, wrapped him in a warm embrace, and tousled his hair.
“You should be proud,” Putin was heard telling Khaibulaev.

The Toughest Curfew in London?
An Olympic sprinter from St. Kitts and Nevis claims his country barred him from competing in London because he spent a night with his wife.
Collins, a former 100-meter world champion and the Caribbean island nation’s flag bearer at the London Games’ opening ceremony, told BBC that he left the athletes village to get “peace and quiet.”
“I needed to get away, to focus because this is the last best chance I would have of a medal,” he told BBC. “I feel that I should stay in a hotel with my wife, with or without their permission.”

Fitting finale: Phelps retires with one last gold
Michael Phelps got up to leave his last news conference at the Olympic pool when his relay mates were asked if they thought he would really stay retired.
Before they could answer, Phelps smiled and said emphatically: “Yes, yes.”
The most decorated Olympian called it a career on Saturday night with a fitting ending _ a gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay at the London Games.
Phelps’ totals in four Olympics: 22 medals, 18 golds, 51 races and 9,900 meters of swimming.
“I’ve been able to do everything that I wanted,” he said. “If you can say that about your career, there’s no need to move forward. Time for other things.”

Nick Delpopolo Expelled From Olympics For Eating Brownies
Nick Delpopolo has been banned from the Olympics for testing positive for cannabis, which he claims came from unwittingly eating a marijuana-laced brownie.
U.S. competitor Nick Delpopolo was expelled from the London Olympic Games on Monday after testing positive for marijuana and apologized to organizers, fans and fellow athletes for unwittingly eating a brownie that had been baked with the drug.
Delpopolo, 23, who finished seventh in the 73kg event, accepted his expulsion.
“My positive test was caused by my inadvertent consumption of food that I did not realize had been baked with marijuana, before I left for the Olympic Games,” said Delpopolo, who trains in New York.
