Obama could place college student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy court. This would lead to young voter turnout for Obama, 2012. Current students in default cannot place their federal or private loans in bankruptcy at the present because of the 2007 passage of the “College Cost Reduction Access Act.” With this new law, the students would avoid repayment. After the restructure of college loans, the US is responsible for more than 90% of recent loan origination.
The new report says that Congress should consider letting borrowers discharge their private student loans through bankruptcy. This would reverse a hard lesson learned during the 1970s. After a surge in former students declaring bankruptcy to avoid repaying their loans, Congress acted to protect lenders beginning in 1977.
President made a big deal over cutting student loan interest-rates to save a few bucks, and now he’s telling young voters he’s making it easier for them to avoid repaying at all. Obama wants votes at all costs.
I think Obama should go at the Universities outrageous tuition, but again, Obama is targeting a huge base of supporters he has seem to have lost from 2008. They would rally behind him and he knows this.
I agree that these tuitions are high. When do you stop spending money we do not have? Obama is buying votes with borrowed money. Does he have no shame? When does he “give” something to the people that aren’t taking, but giving. He is a disgrace.
This is a subject that is close to my heart. The Universities reel you in, give you lots of aid first couple of years, then cut it off, Oh just sign your name electronically we will give you the money. If not, you can attend other lesser college and your credits do not transfer over to the new one, So your out thousands of $$ plus no credits. No win situation. I saw it happen right before my eyes.
Congress must cap tuition. These fat cat administrator with their plush offices over looking the skyline. Stop this vicious cycle. Higher Education reform is in order.
It isn’t the students fault, they are young, many are hard workers and need a break. This will hang over their heads their entire lifetime.
Reform, higher education.
Anyway, where are the jobs?
I agree, and this isn’t just students facing job cuts. Part time faculty are living in poverty while administrators take cruises on their yachts. It’s time we cap tuition and get equal pay for equal work for instructors:

If all the administrators took a cut, would the full time teachers also cut their salaries? Just some interesting sites to peruse. I appears to me that the Unions have hurt our educational systems because teachers are protected to the point of stupidity.

Since I’m a part time instructor, I don’t get tenure, benefits, or any kind of “job protection.” I get paid a flat rate of $550 a credit, or $775 per month per class, not exactly high wages.
The Universities should cap tuition, but where do they cut? The teachers? That would not happen. Cutting back their retirements? Cutting the boards pay, that is possible. As soon as the Universities realize that some will go to a local college for the first year or so maybe they will have to lower their tuition. Like you said where are the jobs?
Carol Jordan, great petition.:-) I am tired of hearing, well, it is the students fault, they could go to a cheaper university. In retrospect yes, some received College credits while is AP classes in High school. only if they had a pro active parent that knew what to do, the High School guidance councilors lead you in the dark ages.
I was a student Adviser at a Div 1 University.work study for 4 yrs.
Still, I believe the 60 based liberal arts credits you can receive at Community college, well, some do not transfer over, so your stuck.
My son had to graduate with 90 liberal arts credits. 188 credits to graduate,5 yr degree from a private University. I know of his trials and tribulations.
and his student loan repayment schedule. disgrace, It was too late for him to transfer. so he is stuck with a six digit loan repayment that will carry into his old age/grey hair
They must cap tuition as many University campuses are now is the real estate business. and not Higher Education.
check back for a future post.
ty for commenting. and gainful insight.

Carol, I do remember I taught a course for U of Penn Dance department. just got paid per credit. just as an instructor. I was already graduated from a University. Did not realize you have no tenure if you stay and teach in Community College and make it a profession.
Great information.
