Did NBC air racist monkey commercial after Gabby Douglas Olympics Gold Medal?
Bob Costas commented Gabby Douglas’s All-Rround Olympics Gold medal broke the stereotype, NBC followed it up immediately with this commercial featuring a monkey doing gymnastics.
I did not catch this as I watched it online in the afternoon. You can see the complete sport in its entirely without commercials, without other sports pushed into the screen. It was an after thought @ 11pm in the evening on a Thursday night.
I am not a fan of NBC coverage of the 2012 Olympics.
Tape delay isn’t cutting it in 2012.
Their editing is least to be desired also.
NBC time to give up your Olympic dominance. If you cannot keep up with the changing social media, give it to a channel that will give it justice.
Taken to task for their tape delay, talking over the opening ceremonies and a garden variety of other missteps so far during their broadcast of the 2012 Olympics, they now have to deal with this: After Bob Costas paid tribute to Gabby Douglas’s gold-medal glory, saying, “But there’s some young African-American girls out there who tonight are saying to themselves, ‘I’d like to try that too,'” they immediately went to an ad featuring a monkey doing gymnastics.
We’re not going to cry racism. There’s almost no chance this was purposely done. But still, with 10 hours between the time she won gold and the time the network aired it in the US, you would think somebody in the production truck would have seen the bad segue.
The Internet was quick to catch on, with YouTube posts, tweets and collective gasps sent out worldwide within minutes after the transition. In the meantime, the network can rest easy, having just had the best Day 5 ratings of any Olympics in 36 years.
Why did he reference her color? Why didn’t he just any young girl? I guess since Gabby won and she happens to be African-American, that white girls wouldn’t want to be a gymnast? I never heard any sportcaster say White-American. NBC you are a disgraceful corporation.
So are you saying that NBC has their commercials preset?
I am viewing it now, watching female swimmer taking gold. National anthem.
@ midnight east coast time.
She has tears flowing, the end of tonight’s NBC viewing.( Friday)
NBC forced to apologise after ill-timed ad features a monkey doing gymnastics – right after showing Gabby Douglas’ gold medal victory
NBC has become the centre of a race storm after airing an ad featuring a monkey performing gymnastics, right after showing the performance of Gabby Douglas, the first African-American to win Olympic gold.
The network has since apologised for the advert’s poor timing, explaining: ‘No offense was intended.
I know this commerical was ill-timed. If we were not as PC or as divided as this country is, would it have bothered us? Obama has divided this country.
NBC’s broadcast of the London games has come under intense scrutiny, which has been exacerbated due to Twitter, which viewers have used as a soap box to gripe about the coverage.
It was accused of manufacturing unnecessary suspense for the women’s team gymnastics final on Wednesday night- which was arguably not even close.
Protests erupted earlier this week following a promo that showed U.S. swimmer Missy Franklin with her gold medal – moments before the network aired the dramatic race in which she won it.
In a statement to MailOnline, NBC apologised for the tape delay mistake.
On Monday night, a Los Angeles-based reporter and vocal critic of the network had his Twitter page suspended.
Guy Adams, who writes for The Independent, lost his account after NBC complained he tweeted the email address of NBC Olympics president Gary Zenkel so viewers could ‘tell him what you think.’
Adams’ account was later reinstated.
There was also outrage over NBC’s decision to cut a tribute for the victims of the London 2005 terrorist bombings from its Olympics Opening Ceremony coverage on Friday.
The network said it did not air the tribute because it wasn’t tailored for the U.S. audience – and aired a Ryan Seacrest interview with iconic swimmer Michael Phelps instead.
Did you see who commented above, They have their trolls out to go on blogs and stand up for them
These game are going on for one more week. Expect the worse!
Gabby, was excellent, she was beautiful and she made us proud. To attempt to diminish this fact is sad, ignorant and no longer tolerable. The world is waking up to the subliminal antics of mean, disturbed and racist people. When will you all accept that anyone who works to perfect their talent, makes untold sacrifices and commits themselves when most of us would have give in or give up regardless of their ethnicity deserves their “star” moment? If NBC wanted to undermine this wonderful superstar then they are sorely mistaken. Research your history the monkey is not the ancestor of any black people………

Stop being the big bad bully with all the cash.
This has been the worse Olympics ever.
The hits just keep coming for NBC.

This was all over all the sports blogs last night and today,
Disgrace.
I am surprised Obama didn’t tweet Gabby.
How could Obama come out against NBC, when NBC has him in their pockets?
Just watched Michael Phelps win his 17th Gold Medal, 21 overall. Do YOU know what followed? Yip, a commerial of Michael winning 21 Medals!

I haven’t watched the Olympics at all. The games are getting more and more political. It is sad that we can’t keep their political views out of this.

You can pick them out in a crowd. They show themselves. 😉
