All Souls’ Day, November 2, Pray for the Dead

2 Maccabees 12:44-45

44 For had he not expected the fallen to rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead,

45 whereas if he had in view the splendid recompense reserved for those who make a pious end, the thought was holy and devout. Hence, he had this expiatory sacrifice offered for the dead, so that they might be released from their sin.

Roman Martyrology

“On this day is observed the commemoration of the faithful departed, in which our common and pious Mother the Church, immediately after having endeavored to celebrate by worthy praise all her children who already rejoice in heaven, strives to aid by her powerful intercession with Christ, her Lord and Spouse, all those who still groan in purgatory, so that they may join as soon as possible the inhabitants of the heavenly city.”

Earth Wind & Fire Founder Maurice White Dead at 74.

Growing up in the single digits in the 1960’s, music was my passion as I was a young dancer.  Then, I became a choreographer at age 12 at my local dance studio.  I had the most brilliant bands to create movement to. One of my favorites was Earth Wind & Fire which I attended their concerts at the Philly Spectrum. As I became classically trained dancer at Temple University in the mid 70’s that Philly R&B was in my blood. Remembering at the Sorority house of Alpha Gamma Delta the album would go on “That’s The Way of The World.”  Brilliant reflections for my soul. Music never would have been the same without your presence.  Ty so for your inspiration Maurice White. R.I.P.

Jeanne Cooper‘s Tribute on The Young and the Restless.

I just got done viewing the Tribute to Jeanne Copper who played the character Katherine Chancellor, as she has left us and gone to heaven.  I was live blogging on Soap Central’s live thread, among her many adoring and heartfelt fans. There wasn’t a dry eye on the thread today as we tried to type our emotions. We had prepared ourselves for this day.

I started viewing the Young and the Restless at age 17 in 1973, the time of its conception.  The Philadelphia School District teachers were on a 3 month strike.  What would I do with my time, to fill the void of not attending school?

Enter, The Young and the Restless. It was a 30 minute format.  Then, they extended it to an hour, when I can not recall at the present.

Throughout the years, in between Temple University’s degrees, my many different reinvention of my life’s pursuits,  Mrs. C was always there. From Philadelphia, to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Boston, New Orleans, working on cruise ships to the Island of Bermuda in the 80’s.  It was viewed @ 7pm so everyone could return from work to watch.  There were no DVR’s and VCR’s were expensive.  Technology was evolving.

Yes, through my former marriage, the birth of my son, who is age 25 now and has walked into many episodes of me staring into the Television at 12:30pm and commenting in vain at times, this Daytime gave me a stability or a constant in my life.  I could always tune in and watch other people’s joys and sorrows.  It felt like a release from every day’s life.  This was now my extended family for 40 years.

Mrs. C, Mrs.Chancellor, Duchess, as your Daytime son called your name,  you will be forever in my heart. What a legacy you have left.

Thank you production, direction and editing, as many her cast members, and family paid her homage to a work well done and told their stories behind the scenes.

God Bless Jeanne Copper.

Philly Cop shot dead after shift, waiting for bus at 20th and Columbia a $118,000 reward has been posted. On August 18, 2012, just before 6am, Police Officer Moses Walker Jr. was shot and killed. Officer Walker was walking in the 2000 block of Cecil B. Moore Avenue where two males approached him. Officer Walker was shot several times and the suspects fled the scene in an unknown direction. Anyone with information regarding this crime is urged to contact the Philadelphia Police Department.

The four-minute video shows Walker looking over his shoulder several times as he walks along a streetlight-illuminated sidewalk, followed by grainy footage of two men walking behind him, first on the opposite side of the street and then crossing over. Out of the camera’s view further down the block, the 19-year police department veteran was shot.

Capt. James Clark, head of the homicide unit replied,

He looked like a young civilian walking down the street, and we think that’s why he was targeted,

Witness to shooting describes the scene remarked,

Two males approached (Walker), one of which had a gun, a robbery was announced and he demanded money,” Clark said. “During this time, the officer attempted to pull out his off-duty weapon … one of the males fired, striking him three times: once in the chest, once in the stomach and once in the hand.”
