Anarchy anyone? Residents From Almost Half Of All US States Petition White House To Secede from United States. Over the past few days, residents from 22 states have filed separate petitions asking President Obama to allow them to secede from the U.S. Each petition, filed via the White House’s “We The People” petition site, requires a response from the executive branch if it receives 25,000 signatures within 30 days.

South Jersey petition joins state efforts to secede from the Union
New Jersey has filed a petition to secede, started by a citizen in Sewell. It has over 2,800 signatures at this writing. According to the White House “We the People” site, it says, citing the Declaration of Independence, the government derives its power from the consent of the governed, and those political bands can be dissolved when that becomes necessary.

Rick Perry opposes secession for Texas
Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) does not support the petition requesting that the White House allow Texas to peaceably secede from the union.
A petition on the White House website to “peacefully grant the State of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own new government” had more than 64,000 signatures as of Tuesday morning

Conservatives have voted more than 375,000 times since Election Day to pick up their marbles and go home. That’s how many virtual signatures appeared Monday night, as clocks in Washington, D.C. chimed midnight, on petitions asking President Barack Obama’s administration to allow 47 of the 50 U.S. states to secede from the country.
A petition from an Arlington, Texas man, launched Nov. 9 via the Obama White House website’s “We the People” tool, had more than 58,000 signatures. That’s more than twice the 25,000 it had Monday morning, a number required to trigger an automatic White House review, according to the administration’s own published rules.

Secession petitions are good PR but bad politics. There is a way for states to legally and politically secede from the American union but it must be a state-by-state process established by constitutional secession conventions in each state.
