The “Girl Power Games” has a nice ring to it.
For the United States, especially, it is a fitting sobriquet.
Female athletes outnumbered males on Team USA for the first time in Olympic history. And they outperformed their counterparts, winning 58 of Team USA’s 104 medals (55.8%) and 29 of 46 gold medals (63%).

More than 219.4 million Americans tuned in, making this year’s Olympics the most-watched event ever in US TV history, according to Nielsen. The 2012 Olympics beat out the 2008 Beijing games, which brought in 215 million viewers.
The NBC primetime broadcast of the Olympics averaged 31.1 million viewers, making it the most-watched non-US Summer Olympics in 36 years. The closing ceremony brought in 31.0 million viewers, also making it the most-watched closing ceremony for a non-US Summer Olympics in 36 years.
The London Olympics boasted an unprecedented 5,535 hours of coverage across NBC and its affiliates, surpassing the 2008 Beijing Olympics coverage by an amazing 2,000 hours.

Islamist extremists have targeted two Tunisian Olympic medalists for behavior and dress seen as un-Islamic, as debate grows over the role of religion and women in the country that unleashed the Arab Spring uprisings.
Radicals on social media networks called on the government to strip Habiba Ghribi, the first Tunisian woman to win an Olympic medal, of her nationality because her running gear was too revealing. She won the silver in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
