Philadelphia’s First Heat Wave Of 2013, That includes South Jersey too. I reside 10 miles east of the City. My AC is leaking freon. So, it is the fan tonight. Woo is me. Maybe cruise down the shore, Ship Bottom, Long Beach Island this weekend. It might be cooler down there. But it all depends on which way the wind direction is.
Summer will be slightly warmer and drier than normal, with the hottest periods in mid- to late June, mid- and late July, and mid-August. The strongest threat of a tropical storm will be in early June.
PHILADELPHIA – Day 3 of the heat wave across the region Friday along with unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups. Temperatures this morning start near 70 degrees and warm into the low 90s.
Below: Me in the Logan Circle, Swann Fountain on a previous hot summer day. As a young child, I use to ride the El to Center City with a group of friends and to the Fountain we would cool off.
Memorial Day Weekend, Philadelphia’s Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial.
In my area, we pay tribute to the fallen from the Vietnam War. This is the War that I remember very clearly. I was a young child but as the war escalated, the protests are vividly etched in my mind. There was a draft, and a lottery system held by the Selective Service System. My friend Glenn’s birthday date was picked at 23. But the war ended and he never got called to duty. I was in High School. Glenn was 4 years older than I and had graduated.
Built in 1987 with the support of veteran’s, their families, public, and corporate contributions Philadelphia’s Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial is one of the most heartfelt in the nation. 58,000 Americans were killed in action, 300,000 wounded and more than 2,400 remain unaccounted for in the war.
The Memorial wall at Front and Spruce streets records the names of Philadelphia’s 646 heroes in stone so that their sacrifice shall never be forgotten.
May all Americans remember all the brave men who died in the name of freedom.
Fralinger String Band waits to enter the warehouse that was engulfed in a four alarm fire at 2nd and Wharton, Philadelphia, PA. People are extending their help as the Mummers Parade is on New Years Day, 2013.
Thomas D’Amore, 24, the captain said,
Fralinger will never back down from a challenge. Unfortunately, this is the first year we’ve rented this spot. The thing that hurts the most was that this is a hobby for the guys who are 9-to-5 blue-collar, so what was lost was all their free time they put in.”
Steve Coper, chairman and business manager of Fralinger replied,
It’s all of our props for New Year’s Day, most of which have been completed. So, if it’s a total loss, it’s very devastating,”
