Four alarm fire at the Fralinger String Band Mummers warehouse fire, located on the 1300 block of South 2nd Street, Philadelphia, PA. This is where the award-winning string band stores their equipment. The costumes are not stored in the building however. They were to be use bring in the New Year January 1st.
Just saw this on news. Glad the costumes aren’t there. Props are stored in there. Hopefully, the musical instruments are with the band. An auto warehouse also uses the building.
With only 3 weeks left until they do their Philly strut up Broad Street.
It is being reported their show will go on!
South Philly Fire Destroys Props for Successful Mummers Group
The chairman for the Fralinger String Band believes the fire destroyed all of the group’s equipment.
teve Coper chairman of the Fralinger String Band who called the fire “devastating.” Coper insisted, however, that the group will still perform on New Year’s Day. The band was slated to go last during the upcoming parade and raised more than $1 million to put together props and costumes for their show. Coper believes all the group’s equipment and props were destroyed. The costumes, however, are not stored in the damaged warehouse.
“We don’t have power right now,” said Jake Jacobs, who Deckey babysits for. “That’s the big issue. We’re going to wait and see what the fire department tells us about when they might get power restored. We’ll see what PECO has to say. We’re just concerned about the smoke damage since it was an auto repair shop so there’s a lot of chemicals and who knows what’s in that smoke. Some of our neighbors are just much more affected than we are. We’re pretty lucky but some of the folks right across the street from the warehouse have just been absolutely engulfed in that tremendous billowing cloud for hours. So I just don’t know what they’re going to do with their homes. That’s a difficult situation.”
FOR MUMMERS, “Two Street” is a place to drink, dance and celebrate.
On Monday, 2nd Street became a place where members of the city’s decorated Fralinger String Band faced premature defeat, as they watched months of preparation for the 2013 New Year’s Day parade literally go up in flames.
A four-alarm fire erupted inside a warehouse at 2nd and Wharton streets where Fralinger rented space for its workshop and stored “dozens and dozens” of floats and props, according to chairman Steve Coper.
But no amount of flames or wrecked props could burn out the spirits of the band, which snagged fifth place in 2012, two years removed from a string of eight straight victories.
As the fire burned, members proudly donned Fralinger shirts at the Shamrock Pub a block down 2nd Street, swigging beers, watching firefighters douse the blaze and resolving to make a strong showing on New Year’s Day despite the unexpected misfortune that befell them.
